Finance Systems Support Intern – Abe P.

On value-based, project work while interning at Cummins…

“During the course of my internship, my main project led me to create a tool to aggregate differing types of information into one central database. This tool was approved and used globally by Cummins employees in the U.S., India and China offices. The tool essentially pulls information from different sources and complies it into a database for easy access by Cummins employees around the world. I also supported forecasting, planning for annual operating plans (AOP), and actuals that get routed to the database, so all reports can be generated based on the most up-to-date data.

In addition to my respected projects, my Cummins internship allowed me to branch out and develop relationships with other interns in the company.  Everyone had a different, diverse background but shared similar goals and desires to grow their careers.”

On accomplishing your goals and the Cummins culture…

“When I first started at Cummins, I knew nothing about how databases worked, in regards to the technical relationships needed for different systems to speak to one another. Therefore, I took the Cummins MSBI two- day training and learned how to use several different software applications. This provided a solid foundation for me to jump start my intern projects. I had frequent meetings with my resource teams to discuss how to make this work technically and by the end of my internship, the project was a success!

During my internship, I learned that flexibility is key.  The culture at Cummins supports the needs of its employees. The flexibility of employee schedules, due to the type of work, location of work and personal schedules, promote a very personable and collaborative work environment.”

On experiencing technology and innovation…

“Being exposed to Envision Cummins was very eye-opening, in respect to how Cummins pays such close attention toward innovation of new processes to become an agile, world-class and global-minded company. The desire to move towards a more common and uniform system for finance was very impressive to me.”

On impacting the customer…

“Since the role I played actually supported the finance function, my project was to address an issue where an internal customer (Cummins) needed things done differently. My work improved their ability to accomplish things, therefore my impact affected the Company as my customer.”

On the benefits from your internship…

“I experienced a lot of different environments, such as our finance group, and technical development areas, however, I benefited most from learning about information technology in the finance world. Being able to understand the importance of connecting data correctly, learning how data flows and troubleshooting within my projects was a huge benefit for me.”

On what you enjoyed most about working at Cummins…

“Freedom to get my project done.  I wasn’t micro-managed in any of my projects or tasks. I felt trusted by my manager to get things done, reach out to others, and most of all I felt empowered to get the job accomplished correctly and successfully.”

On Working Right at Cummins…

“For me, focusing on delivering superior results align with Working Right at Cummins.  My manager and the people around me supported me to execute my projects and to do it the right way. I once had an issue with the critical functionality of my program, which was supposed to be presented to the users within a few hours of the error.  My manager shifted priorities and rearranged meetings to ensure she could work with me to fix the issue before the presentation. The teamwork and dedication to delivering results ensured the presentation went well.”
