Engineering Intern - Junyan L.

On value-based, project work while interning at Cummins…

“My internship project involved working on a Failure Incidence Review Reporting Group (FIRG) issue for Tier 4 engines. My project was responsible for solving an issue with the valves of the engines.  After realizing a number of material changes were considered to account for wear, I oversaw a number of tests to try different valve materials and seating angles to determine combinations that gave the valves optimal wear.

The analytical skills I learned from my coursework taught me how to review data and use it reach conclusions and make decisions.  These skills were essential for me to complete my project.  Furthermore, my classes taught me to be resilient and work hard to get results.  This made the transition to employment at Cummins very smooth. Cummins and my alma mater share similar expectations when it comes to projects and tasks.”

On accomplishing your goals and the Cummins culture…

“During my internship, I had the opportunity to collaborate with many different groups.  These groups worked really well together and supported me in completing my project.

The culture at Cummins is very open.  Although there are several different departments working on many different things, Cummins feels like its one big team.  Everyone at Cummins is open to supporting each other.”

On experiencing technology and innovation…

“Working within the Cummins Emissions Solutions (CES) business during my internship was very eye-opening. I caught a glimpse of how Cummins aftertreatment solutions use cutting-edge technology to create their products. Furthermore, it was really cool to see the advanced technology used for Cummins fuel injection systems to perform so efficiently.”

On impacting the customer…

“During my internship, I worked on implementing a new method to improve the durability of valve wear. Improving the valve wear will provide Cummins customers with a more durable and robust product.”

On company and community involvement…

“I really benefited from attending the speed mentoring events hosted by the Cummins Purdue Recruiting Team. It was really exciting to talk with several different employees about their experiences at Cummins.  Being able to network with alumni was really rewarding.”

On the benefits from your internship…

“This internship allowed me to expand my technical knowledge, especially about engines.  It was beneficial to work in a diverse work environment, as I saw firsthand how teams of employees applied diverse ideas and perspectives to the work being done at Cummins.

As an intern, I was surprised to be given large responsibilities. I felt like my manager and team treated me equally to any full-time employee. I was given impactful work and was fully supported by my manager and team as I completed it.”
