Manufacturing Engineering Intern - William B.

On value-based, project work while interning at Cummins…

“During my internship, my project focused on revising the shipping dock process for dock shipping and receiving. This involved process flow modifications to ensure that we can accomplish both tasks in a constrained amount of space.  I worked closely with the Director of Manufacturing Engineering to ensure that this project met all the requirements. My project played an important role in the functionality of the Seymour Engine Plant’s manufacturing logistics and will be utilized for years to come.

My classes taught me several key technical skills that allowed me to easily work on projects here at Cummins. My skills in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), programming, and modeling allowed me to quickly provide value to my team.”

On accomplishing your goals and the Cummins culture…

“Interning at Cummins has taught me things firsthand that I wouldn’t have learned through my college coursework.  My team encouraged me to learn new things from other employees and when I asked for help I always got it. The Company culture is very inclusive and open for interns to ask questions and learn.”

On experiencing technology and innovation…

“I touched on new technology through the use of Gauge Reproducibility and Repeatability (GR&R) Studies.  Completing these studies ensured that the manufacturing process for the high-horsepower QSK95 engine is both reproducible and repeatability.  This is very important in a manufacturing setting to ensure that all operators in any environment can produce a quality product every time.”

On impacting the customer…

“My internship project has helped increase the productivity of the manufacturing process at the Seymour Engine Plant and this will allow the customers to receive a quality product in a timely manner.”

On company and community involvement…

“I participated in focus group activities with the Veterans Affinity Group (VAG).  This focus group helped determine how Cummins is improving at recruiting and hiring Veterans.  Military Veterans are a key demographic at Cummins. It was great to see how Cummins is working to employ and improve its hiring practices.”

On the benefits from your internship…

“I learned a lot from the many valuable and thought to provoke projects I was involved in during my internship at Cummins. All the hands-on work was really beneficial and helped me learn what my future career could be like after graduation.”

On what you enjoyed most about working at Cummins…

“Working for a respected company gave me a really great feeling. Cummins takes pride in providing a collaborative and inclusive workplace where people strive to live up to high standards.”
